30 minutes of silent reading. Finish reading assignment from last class period, OR if you have already finished, begin on the reading for homework. Refer to your bookmark for page numbers.
Opener:
Look at the following sentence from The Sunflower.
"It was an uncanny situation: those corpse-like hands, the bandages, and the place in which this strange encounter was taking place." Page 25
Notice what moves the author makes. What does the author use in this sentence that he also used in our "opener" and "closer" sentences? In your blog post, try to write your own sentence like this one.
Close Re-reading:
Look at pages 52-55. What stands out to you in this passage? Annotate for what you think is important, or what stands out to you. Notice the "pathos" we have been discussing. What emotions do you feel? Which words and phrases lead you in that direction. Re-read this text 2 more additional times annotating each time.
Think/Write:
On page 52 the author asks, "He sought my pity, but had he any right to pity? Did a man of his kind deserve anybody's pity?"
On your blogs, answer these questions in a PEE paragraph. Argue for or against pity for this man. Use text from the book to support your answer. Remember to use pathos in order to persuade your audience. (Remember to use a colon!)
When you are finished posting your blog, comment on at least 2 of your classmates' blogs. Remember to comment insightfully.
